Statue of friar Luka Ibrišimović
In front of St. Theresa’s cathedral, there is a statue of friar Luka Ibrišimović (1626-1698) who was born and buried in Požega (in the Holy Spirit crypt). By erecting that monument in 1893, a work of the sculptor Đuro Kiš, Požega repaid its hero who on the 12th of March 1688, St. Gregory’s day, led the people into the decisive battle against the Ottomans. Grateful citizens of Požega mark this day every year as the Day of the City and in memory of friar Luka with different special programs and festivities in nearby vineyard cottages and cellars.
