Viškovci Old Town
South of Viškovci village, among the forests of Mount Požega, there is a fort called Viškovački grad. Forest pathways from the direction of Viškovci, Blacko, or Vesela villages lead to this impressive ruin.
The history of this fort is covered with a veil of secrecy. We do not know when nor for whom it was built. The only time the Viškovac estate was mentioned in historical sources was in 1400 when it was casually mentioned as one of the areas owned by the local nobles. We also have no information about when it was abandoned, but it likely happened during the Ottoman conquests of the Požega region, meaning around the end of the 1530s. Interesting folk tales and mysteries are associated with Viškovac. Rumor has it that a treasure was hidden in the fort. However, it has never been found.
Even though it has been in the same place for more than half a millennium, Viškovački grad fort is never the same! Nature gives this pearl of Mount Požega a new attire every day and visiting this ruin in different seasons is always a new experience.
