Slavonian rakija will warm up your soul
Nothing warms up cheeks and stomach better than Slavonian rakija. It opens the appetite, loosens the tongue, and it is part of the Slavonian “folklore”, a nice folk custom that is passed down from generation to generation. It is easy to accept it even if you are an urban type or you are not an ardent lover of this hard liquor.
The unwritten rule is the older, the better. Each “real” Slavonian house has it and it is from their own, rich orchards. Distilling rakija is not a job, but a ritual and friends and neighbors are invited for the tasting.
It wakes you up better than coffee, it’s an excellent aperitif, and there is no medicine like it even in folk medicine. A small glass when your bones hurt, it is good for a stomachache or insomnia, it is excellent for a cold, rub it over your body if you have a temperature…Slavonians claim it makes wonders.
Plum rakija (šljivovica) is a classic among rakija, but a good William pear, apple, walnut, or sour cherry rakija are also held in high esteem…
Toasting with a shot glass (čokanjčić) of rakija is an act of hospitality and generosity of the host, and Slavonians are unmatched when it comes to hospitality. Rakija in the morning, rakija before every meal, rakija in the evening… Rakija above all! Cheers!
