Sail across the Pannonian Sea
24 million years ago, the sea was in the place of green plains, mountains, hills, dense forests, fruitful vineyards, and fertile orchards we can see today. Numerous fossils of what used to be living organisms, mostly sea animals, testify about the ancient history of this “Slavonian archipelago”. Most of them were found on the southern slopes of Papuk, from Vrhovci village to Velika.
16 million years ago, Papuk was an island in the Pannonian sea where rhinos used to walk, coral reefs were growing, monk seals used to live, and around which a shark – megalodon - that is today extinct, used to swim…
A must-see sensation in Velika, within Papuk Nature Park, is the House of the Pannonia sea with an impressive display. Besides exhibition halls, this visitor and the educational center also offers multipurpose lecture rooms for interactive lectures, a souvenir shop, and a super interesting classroom – a labyrinth in the open.
Here you will discover the secrets of the beginning of life on our Planet, and find out everything about fossils, the animal and plant world from ancient times. Kids will especially enjoy playing games on the interactive floor, just like they are on the sand of the Pannonian sea. It would be worth it to join them, wouldn’t it?
Dive deep in the see in the Interpretation center Terra Panonica in Pleternica through augmented reality and VR glasses. A special experience for both the small and the big ones!
