Treasury of the Požega Cathedral
In 2004, the bishop of Požega, Antun Škvorčević founded the Treasury of the Požega Cathedral to be used for the safekeeping of liturgical objects from the Cathedral that are of great cultural and historical value.
The Treasure was placed in the oratory above the right cathedral sacristy to be available during the mass. It was decorated according to the concept of Mario Beusan from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Zagreb, and it was opened to the public in 2015.
There are more than sixty exhibits of sacral objects in the Treasury. Among them are liturgical dishes with a few late gothic chalices from the 15th and the 16th centuries, a vestment in which a miter and a chasuble of bishop Franjo Thauszy, the builder of the cathedral, are especially important, and a chasuble, dalmatics, a cape, and vellum which were a gift of the empress, Maria Theresa, together with the rococo chalice and Paulines handwritten hymns from the 17th century for the dedication of the church of Saint Teresa.
A group of the newest objects in the Treasury is mostly gifts received for the foundation of the Diocese of Požega in 1997. Episcopal pastorals, pectorals, rings, chalices, church vestments, and trimmed gospels and missals are exhibited. These are the works of Hrvoje Ljubić, Šime Vulas, Lazer Lumezije, Ana Nada Krpelnik, Vera Klepaj Turnšek, Father Marko Ivan Rupnik in craft performance of Croatian and Italian goldsmiths. Gifts from Pope John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Bartholomew, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, to the bishop of Požega, Antun, and gifts of certain bishops and priests hold a notable place.
The Treasury can be visited by making an appointment at the rectory of Saint Teresa of Avila church!
